Loro is a film about the entourage of businessmen and power-hungry politicians who orbited around the media tycoon and the most corrupt MP in Italian history, Silvio Berlusconi, between 2006 and 2010. It is a profane biopic comedy, skewering both its subject and modern Italy itself, and it starts with a young guy-on-the-make whose ambition is to leave his provincial city and get close to Berlusconi in Rome. His means of doing so is sordid but effective. Trafficking beautiful women as escorts to attend parties. Enter Berlusconi, a dirty old man who keeps a collection of favored women and organizes “bunga bunga” parties while married to his second wife Veronica Lario. Released in Italy in two parts, Loro is Sorrentino’s most over-the-top movie, a decadence on an unprecedentedly dazzling scale.
