Accompanying his veterinarian dad to the zoo each day, Tom develops a deep bond with the animals that he treats as friends. When World War II escalates and Tom's dad is conscripted in the British army, the fate of the animals is placed in Tom's hands. With looming air raids and murmurs that, in the event of a bombing, the animals are viewed as a risk to public safety, Tom hatches a plan to move Buster the elephant to a safe location. Unable to carryout the plan on his own, he enlists the help of his misfit friends. Reluctant to participate, they ultimately find a suitable hiding place with eccentric animal lover Denise (Penelope Wilton, Downton Abbey). Together, they work to keep Buster hidden from authorities, but when his health starts to deteriorate, they'll have to risk it all by returning to the zoo to retrieve his medicine. Inspired by true events, this story serves as a reminder that friendship and heroism can come from unlikely places.
