The film follows, in a challenging and unconventional visual style, the coming together and the evolution of the Shukar Collective phenomenon. The Shukar Collective Project brings to the screen not only the Bucharest clubs, the concert halls and the DJs’ studios, but also the gypsy musicians’ homes in the Teleorman and Giurgiu counties. The film goes beyond the boundaries of the musical documentary, its research horizon talking, more than about the music, about the contact and the clash between cultures.
ABOUT DIRECTOR
Matei Alexandru Mocanu studied at AUBG, Cultural Anthropology & Visual Communication. After his first year there, The Soros Open Society Foundation withdrew its financial support and he had to come back to Romania. Here, he reluctantly studied Political Sciences at SNSPA, but, in the end, he finished the Film and TV Directing section of the UNATC. His graduation film,”Aitilop”, was deemed by the exam commission as “immoral and obscene” and, consequently, prohibited its screening in festivals.
