Winner of Best director award at 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The main characters are Wiktor and Zula. Wiktor is an accomplished pianist and conductor in early 1950s Soviet Poland who, together with Irena, is auditioning young people from the Polish countryside to train and perform in a traveling show meant to showcase the beauty of the simple, rural arts of Polish country folks. One of those is the luminous Zula. Soon Wiktor and Zula fall in love and the act becomes a hit because of which they travel around Europe. Wiktor proposes Zula to defect with him to the West while they’re in Berlin, but Zula isn’t so sure…
About the director
Pawel Pawlikowski was born in Warsaw and left Poland at the age of fourteen first for the UK. He studied literature and philosophy in London and Oxford. Pawlikowski started making documentary films for the BBC in the late 1980s with which he won numerous inteernational awards, including an Emmy. In1998, Pawlikowski filmed a low budget TV film, „Twockers“, which was followed by two full-length features, „Last Resort“ and „My Summer of Love“. Both films won BAFTA awards.With his film, „Ida“, he won the 2015 Foreign Language Academy Award, five European Film Awards, a Bafta and a Goya, among many other prizes. He currently lives in Warsaw and teaches film direction and writing at the Wajda School.
