On the heels of his second Academy Award®-winner The Salesman following his first for A Separation, Asghar Farhadi wrote and directed this Spanish-language psychological thriller starring Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darín. The film follows Laura (Cruz) on her travels from Argentina to her small home town in Spain for her sister’s wedding, bringing her two children along for the occasion. Amid the joyful reunion and festivities, the eldest daughter is abducted. In the tense days that follow, various family and community tensions surface and deeply hidden secrets are revealed.
About the director
Asghar Farhadi was born in 1972 in Iran. He received his Bachelors in Theater from University of Tehran's School of Dramatic Arts in 1998 and his Masters in Stage Direction from Tarbiat Modarres University a few years later. Farhadi made his directorial debut in 2003 with the movie Dancing in the Dust which earned recognition at Moscow International Film Festival and a year later he made Beautiful City and received awards at Warsaw International Film Festival. His third film, Fireworks Wednesday won the Gold Hugo at the 2006 Chicago International Film Festival. His fourth film, About Elly (2009) won him the Silver Bear for Best Director at 59th Berlin International Film Festival. With the movie A Separation Farhadi becomes an international star and receives critical acclaim inside and outside of Iran and in the end wins an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film of the Year category. In 2016 he repeats this feat with the movie A Salesman and again wins the Academy Award (among numerous other awards and recognitions) in Best Foreign Language Film of the Year category. Everybody Knows is his eighth film.
