Boris and Zhenya are going through a divorce. Arguing constantly, and in the process of selling their apartment, they are already preparing for their new lives: Boris with his younger, pregnant girlfriend and Zhenya with the wealthy lover who is keen to get married. Neither seems interested in their 12-year-old son Alyosha. Until he disappears.
Andrey Zvyagintsev was born in 1964 in Novosibirsk, Siberia. After graduating in 1990 from the acting department of Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS), Andrey went on to act in independent theatre, TV and film. In 2000 he made his directorial debut with three episodes for REN TV’s The Black Room. Zvyagintsev’s first motion picture, The Return, was nominated for a Golden Globe after winning the Golden Lion and the Lion of the Future for Best Director’s Debut at the 60th Venice Film Festival in 2003. His second feature, The Banishment, premiered at the 60th Cannes Film Festival in 2007 and earned Konstantin Lavronenko the Palme D’Or for Best Actor, the first ever for a Russian actor. Andrei Zvyagintsev also won 2010 Sundance / NHK International Filmmakers Award for the script of Elena. His 2014 film Leviathan was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where Zvyagintsev and Oleg Negin won the award for Best Screenplay for the film. Leviathan won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
