Once large herds of cows occupied the fields near the villages in Eastern Hungary. However, the chime of the cowbell turned into the sound of funeral bells, as the large herds disappeared from the small villages. Balla Bálint, one of the last local cowbreeders, took farewell to his herd, then made a coffin for himself out of straw, rushes and willow branches. This short documentary depicts a now completely lost world, using sound, music, montage and suggestive images.
Dezső Zsigmond was born in Gyöngyös in 1956. He is currently living in Budapest. Zsigmond directed several feature and documentary films, often dealing with the life of rural Hungary and Hungarian minorities in neighboring countries. His films often mix together fiction and reality – a sort of magic realism, erasing the bounderies of fantasy and reality.
